Pride March - Speech Pride March June 27, 2015
Why are we here?
We shouldn’t be here right? Or should we?
But we are. And as we are, something is wrong?
Have you ever heard of a Straight Pride March? No right?
Why? Because it’s the norm, the standard and the majority.
Yet minorities are also a part of nature! Yes they are, yet only humans have twisted this fact into an unnatural explanation why it is unnatural, sinful, the religious term, or an act against nature, the political term.
Why are we not just out but also loud?
Many people say that, having no legal problems should be enough, but that may have been applicable for the last century. Homosexual people and basically all people within the LGBT community should be able to enjoy the same rights as all the other members of society. Not too long ago, black people were degraded due to political and belief systems. The same applies to women and children. The opponents of equal rights often come up with the most absurd claims; like marriage equality will lead to bestiality, hence an individual demanding to marry his or her pet. What we are standing for is the equality of consent adult humans, and that does not include unequal knot tying like between animals and humans and adults and children. Also, the equalizing of LGBT rights, leads to no increase of that group too. With or without marriage, the percentage of LGBT members will remain the same, because we can’t decide on who we are by natural default. Arfel Tayona, a Filipino biologist and friend of mine said: “Homosexuality is the result of successful species in evolution.” And we have many successful species; more than 1500 to be precise, and they for sure do not chose consciously their sexuality.
Now, still some organizations or belief systems will still argue against it, yet that is not a reason to make their reasoning the default setting of the world or the country. If I am a member of a certain organization, and it prohibits me to marry the same sex, so let it be, as it will still be my free will to follow that doctrine as a member. Yet nonmembers should not be involved in those terms and conditions. LGBT rights, and basically they should even just be called adult rights, in their default setting should not act as a force, but as a platform, a possibility to choose weather one wants to take advantage of it or not. Heterosexual marriage has also never lead to a 100% following of it. And even heterosexual people can marry; they don’t even bother, out of their own reasons of choice.
Further, many LGBT members are reluctant to demand full rights, because they think being legal with their sexuality is enough, or the fear of rejection by family or friends. Well let me say that every fear is understandable, yet equal rights will lead to even stronger family rights and protection. Children LGBT people will enjoy full protection and the right to be adopted by the partner the single parent married.
And regarding the minors within the LGBT community, anti-discrimination and bullying laws will protect those people growing up.
The US now same sex marriage is a constitutional right. Now thousands of Filipinos abroad can secure their partnership. When a foreigner marries straight in The Philippines, he or she receives a visa securing the stay with its spouse. For same sex couples there is no security yet.
We as BUS-Philippines want to do more than make statements; we want to reach the grassroots, the LGBT community in the most vulnerable places, and you as an individual can to similar. Helping one person helps a life. Stop bullying by stepping in-between, stop discrimination by stepping in-between, stop suppression by lifting up. We all have at least one LGBT member within our families, or friends or colleagues; show him or her that we care, accept and respect THE HUMAN.
