Gambia: Jammeh Defeated in a Landmark Election
Who would have thought about Yahya Jammeh dethrowned? Jammeh was ruling the country with an iron fist, insulting and condeming other countries, Human Rights and the opposition. But the opposition, this time, took the right step. It merged under Adama Barrow, a political newcomer, and internationally experienced business man. Mr. Barrow, is 51 years old, who was also a security guard, who spent his early years tackling shoplifters at Argos's store on London's Holloway Road.

In the shock result, Gambia's 22 year ruling president Yahya Jammeh will concede defeat to the United Democratic Party, the head of the country's electoral commission said Friday. "It's really unique that someone who has been ruling this country for so long has accepted defeat." Alieu Momar Njie told reporters ahead of the release of the results of Thursday's presidential election.
Ousainou Darboe is a Gambian human rights lawyer and politician. He is also a leader of the country's main opposition party, the United Democratic Party. He first ran for president in the September 1996 election, following the military coup of 1994. He was arrested for demonstrating peacefully, together with 18 others, and has been jailed for three years for taking part in an unauthorised demonstration. His joy will be overwhelming!
Electoral commission chief Alieu Momarr Njai said Mr Jammeh received just 36.7 per cent of the vote compared to Adama Barrow's 45.5 per cent. "I hereby declare Adama Barrow duly elected president of the Republic of Gambia for the next five years," Mr Njai said.
It is with hope, that the country will transform. Under a new stable government, investments may come in, Gambians from abroad may comeback and build businesses, and tourism may flourish again. Hopefully homosexuals wont have to fear execution.... but thats one of the top of the iceberg hopes.
The official results, played in to ARose from The Gambia:
